The story of Grâce Merveille

A Life Saved on Her Very First Day. Today, Grâce Merveille is a little girl bursting with joy, growing up within the walls of the Cœur de Jésus-Christ Orphanage. But her story did not begin there. It began on February 1, 2022 — the day she was born.

She was barely a day old when she found herself at the center of a deeply troubling situation. On February 2, 2022, her mother brought her to meet a woman, in what authorities who intervened would later describe as a transaction involving the handover of the child in exchange for money. Adoption, of course, can be a path that leads a child to a loving family. But the circumstances surrounding this particular exchange were different — different enough that they demanded the immediate intervention of the authorities.

A Decisive Intervention. Thanks to the swift action of the Cameroonian police and the Ministry of Social Affairs, baby Grâce Merveille was brought to safety. The relevant services took charge of the situation and ultimately entrusted her to the Cœur de Jésus-Christ Orphanage, where she would finally find a secure and nurturing environment.

We remain deeply grateful to the Cameroonian authorities, and especially to those who worked to protect this child when she had lived only a single day.

From Refuge to Family. When Grâce Merveille arrived at the orphanage, she was just one day old. What she found there was not merely a shelter — it was a family.

Over the years that followed, she grew up surrounded by affection, care, and the constant attention of those who walked beside her, day after day. Today, she is four years old. She goes to school, she learns, she plays, and she grows — just like any little girl her age. She is joyful, bright-eyed, and full of life, and her presence brings tremendous happiness to the whole orphanage family.

Grâce Merveille, a Symbol of Hope. Her story is a reminder of just how precious a child's earliest years truly are, and how vital it is for every child to grow up protected, loved, and respected.

Grâce Merveille came to us when she was only a day old. Today, she is growing, learning, and building her future. Hers is the story of a little girl whose life took an unexpected turn in its very first hours — yet who found, at the Cœur de Jésus-Christ Orphanage, a place she can truly call home.

Grâce Merveille is doing well. She is growing up in joy. And we are grateful to bear witness to her journey.

Her name, "Grâce Merveille" — Grace and Wonder — carries a special meaning for us today: that of a precious life, protected, and filled with hope.

A Child, a Story, a Hope. Daniel is a young boy of fourteen who today calls the Cœur de Jésus Orphanage his home. His is a story that is at once unusual and deeply moving.

He arrived at the orphanage when he was about nine years old, not long after losing his mother, with whom he had lived in Douala. His father, who was living in Mali at the time, returned to Cameroon for his wife's funeral. Faced with the reality of his son's situation — and unable to care for him from so far away — he set out to find a place that could welcome Daniel and look after him properly. And so, it was to us that he entrusted his son.

Daniel is autistic. We had never before welcomed an autistic child into our orphanage. We did not know exactly how to support him, and we understood, even then, that this new responsibility would be a real challenge for our team.

The early days were especially hard. Daniel was often agitated and prone to frequent outbursts. When he was hungry, he might cry out. When he wanted to sleep, he might cry out just the same. His reactions were not always ones we understood, and little by little, we had to learn how to communicate with him and how to answer his needs.

But we made a choice: we would not be afraid of this difference.

We reminded ourselves, simply, that before anything else, Daniel was a child — a creation of God, in need of love, protection, guidance, and a family around him.

So we opened our doors to Daniel. And we opened our hearts to him too.

A Double Loss. A few years after he arrived at the orphanage, Daniel faced another blow: his father passed away. Today, Daniel has lost both his parents. The orphanage has become his home, and our team has become his family, day in and day out. His journey reminds us, again and again, that some children need an even more particular kind of care to bring out the gifts already within them.

Discovering His Potential. In Cameroon, the specialized programs that support and educate autistic children are, unfortunately, very costly. Daniel's specialized schooling can run to around 450,000 FCFA — a sum that is difficult for our orphanage to sustain on a regular basis.

During his first two years with us, a generous donor covered the cost of his schooling. But after that, we were unable to find further financial support to continue this specialized care. So we sought another way forward. We hired a teacher who works with him every day — observing his abilities, encouraging his learning, and above all, searching for the potential we know lies within him. We believe, deeply, that Daniel has gifts that are simply waiting to be discovered and developed.

Daniel, Our Special Child. Daniel holds a particular place in the story of our orphanage. His arrival taught us that our mission is not simply to take children in, but to learn to understand each child according to their needs, their differences, and their abilities. We do not yet know how far Daniel will go. But we believe he deserves the chance to find out.

With God's help, and the support of people of goodwill, we hope to give him the care, the education, and the attention he needs — so that he may develop his abilities to the fullest and build the future that is his. Daniel is not defined by his autism alone, nor by the loss of his parents. Daniel is a child with a story, a dignity, abilities of his own, and a future ahead of him. And at the Cœur de Jésus Orphanage, we have chosen to believe in that future — right alongside him.

The story of Ngalle Daniel

A Life Saved in Its Earliest Days. Graciela is a young girl of ten today. She was born in 2016. She was still only a baby when her mother left her in a traditional pit latrine, dug into the ground. Someone nearby heard sounds — cries — rising up from the depths below, and raised the alarm at once. Help arrived, and there they found baby Graciela. She was pulled from that place and rushed to the hospital, where she would remain for nearly a year.

A Long Road Before Finding a Home. When she left the hospital, Graciela was first taken in by another orphanage, where she was cared for until the age of six. According to the information passed on to us, she suffered for several years from serious health complications caused by what she had absorbed during her time in the latrine — infections that continued to affect her until she was about five years old. After six years at that first orphanage, a new hardship arrived: the woman who ran the institution passed away. Once again, Graciela was left traumatized by loss, and this time she was entrusted to us. And so it was that she came to our doors, four years ago.

A Path Toward Healing. When Graciela arrived at the Cœur de Jésus-Christ Orphanage, she still carried the weight of those early, difficult years. But by the grace of God, the infections cleared, and today she is doing much better. She is now in the CM1 grade — the equivalent of fourth grade. She is a very reserved little girl. Yet take the time to watch her closely, and you can still sense a trauma that lingers deep within her. At the orphanage, we do everything we can to help her rebuild her confidence, to surround her with love, and to help heal the wounds she carried from the very start of her life.

Restoring Love and Trust. Graciela lived through a profound sense of rejection. But we want to show her, every single day, that she is loved, that she has worth, and that she deserves to grow up in safety and tenderness. Our hope is that, as she grows, she will come to feel fully loved — and that the pain of her past will, little by little, loosen its hold on her.

Graciela's story is the story of a child who has weathered enormous trials, yet who keeps moving forward, carried by the love, care, and support she receives today. At the Cœur de Jésus-Christ Orphanage, we believe that God can restore lives and give birth to hope — even after the deepest of wounds.
